Kenyan gospel minister Mercy Masika has reached out to her followers with a message about marriage and financial expectations.
In a video shared via her Facebook account, the ‘Mwema’ hitmaker urged single people to reconsider their priorities when looking for a partner.
No Biblical Requirement for Riches
The singer began by addressing the idea that a spouse must be wealthy. She pointed out that religious texts do not set a financial standard for marriage.
“There’s nowhere in the Bible it is written that you need to marry a rich man,” Masika stated. She added that grand displays of wealth are also not a requirement.
“There’s nowhere that is written in the Bible that people need to come with choppers for your wedding,” she said.
Masika suggested that many people might not start their journey with a “made man.” However, she encouraged those who may be struggling financially at the start.
“One day you may be rich. And even if you’re not rich in terms of money, you have to be rich in purpose.”
The Value of PurposeWhile Masika acknowledged that financial stability is useful, she argued it should not be the primary focus. She told her audience that money is not the ultimate goal in a union.
“Because money is good but it is not everything. It is important but it is not everything,” she explained. Her advice to those currently looking for a partner was simple.
“So those of you who are single, calm down. Calm down,” she urged.
Every Marriage Has its ‘Exams’
Masika also addressed those who are already married. She cautioned them against comparing their lives to others based on money.
She explained that every couple faces their own unique challenges, which she described as “exams“.
“Everyone has their own exams,” she noted.She explained that while some couples might struggle with money, others might face health issues or different personal trials.
“The exams may not be financial,” she said, adding that “there’s a test in every marriage.”
Beyond the Wedding Day
The gospel minister highlighted that the cost of a wedding ceremony does not determine the success of the relationship.
In Kenya, high-end weddings can often cost millions of shillings, but Masika reminded viewers that the ceremony is only the beginning.
“The real work starts after the wedding,” she remarked. She offered a comforting message to those who did not have a lavish celebration.“I am sorry if your wedding did not cost 1 million. I am sorry. But God loves you and he cares for you and your family,” she concluded.
