A young man from Boror Village in Rongai, Nakuru county, has finally married his mzungu fiancée, Tabea Jasmin Schumann, after two years of dating and overcoming cultural opposition. Gideon Kirui married his beloved wife Tabea in a colourful ceremony in Nakuru. Gideon Kirui told TUKO.co.ke that he met Tabea in 2024 in Israel, where he was pursuing a Master of Arts in Sustainable Development at Tel Aviv University. His now wife, who is originally from Hannover, Germany, was also working with a Christian organisation at the time. “We met during a church service at Hillsong Church in Tel Aviv and became friends. Soon after, we started dating, and that friendship has now grown into marriage,” Kirui said. Was Gideon’s family against him marrying white woman? The young man credited his marriage to what he described as the hand of God, noting that without faith, the union would have been nearly impossible. He explained that he comes from a highly conservative community and had been warned before leaving Kenya for his studies in Israel against bringing home a white wife. Apart from resistance from his own family, Tabea also faced concerns from her side, making their relationship even more challenging. When they fell in love, these cultural barriers nearly stood in their way, but they chose to fight for their relationship and remain committed to one another.
Over time, both families gradually warmed up to the union. In November 2025, Kirui travelled back to Kenya with his fiancée for her formal introduction, after which they began planning their wedding. “She had heard many negative stories about white women who married black men, as well as the common racial stereotypes that exist. However, through Christ and the support of our parents, friends, and church leaders, we were able to overcome these cultural barriers and stereotypes to start a family and unite in holy matrimony,” he said. The couple tied the knot in a colourful wedding ceremony held in Ngata on January 3, 2026. Both families, including parents and siblings, were present to witness and celebrate the joyful occasion. The bride looked stunning in a simple yet elegant white gown, while the groom looked sharp in a blue suit. Their bridal team added colour to the memorable day in long maroon dresses, as the groomsmen wore classic black three-piece suits. Gideon thanked everyone who supported them throughout their journey, saying he was grateful to begin a new chapter with the love of his life after beating all odds. “Thank you to friends and family for joining us in celebrating our union. Special thanks to Gospel Outreach Church, Salgaa, for officiating our marriage. We are also grateful to our diaspora community in Perth, Sydney, Germany, and Israel for supporting us and following the event virtually,” he said.
