United Green Movement (UGM) co-party leader and former Chief Justice David Maraga is set to tour the United States for three weeks as he steps up his engagement with Kenyans living abroad ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Maraga said the diaspora should be viewed as an important partner in Kenya’s development and democratic future, rather than merely a source of money sent home.
“Our Constitution recognizes the Diaspora as full partners in Kenya’s future, not just a source of remittances,” Maraga said.
He said he would begin his three-week tour of the United States on September 17, 2026, during which he plans to meet Kenyans in different states and listen to their views on the country’s affairs.
“Starting September 17, I will be in the United States for three weeks to listen, share, and engage directly with Kenyans across Delaware, Texas, New York, and beyond,” he said.
The tour is part of Maraga’s wider efforts to engage Kenyans at home and abroad ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to an earlier statement by Maraga’27 Campaign Secretariat Communications Coordinator David Makali, the former Chief Justice will visit several states during the tour, including Delaware, Texas, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and Georgia.
Maraga’s US tour follows his nationwide Ukatiba Caravan, which took him to 43 counties between February and April this year.
During the caravan, Maraga engaged Kenyans from different backgrounds on the state of the nation and discussed issues surrounding governance, constitutionalism and the country’s democratic future.
Makali said the former Chief Justice’s engagement with Kenyans in the diaspora would build on the conversations he held during the nationwide tour.
The campaign secretariat said the 2010 Constitution recognises the role of Kenyans living outside the country and provides a framework for their participation in the country’s development and democratic processes.
The diaspora remains an important contributor to Kenya’s economy, with remittances from Kenyans abroad providing a major source of foreign exchange.
The United States is the largest source of diaspora remittances to Kenya, accounting for an estimated 50 to 60 per cent of total monthly and annual inflows from abroad.
The campaign secretariat estimates that Kenyans abroad send between Sh380 billion and Sh405 billion in combined cash and in-kind support.
Beyond meeting Kenyan communities, Maraga is expected to use the tour to engage international leaders on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The UGM presidential flag bearer is expected to discuss issues of mutual interest with international leaders as he seeks to position his campaign within broader conversations on Kenya’s governance, democracy and development.
The tour will also provide Maraga with an opportunity to outline his political agenda to Kenyans abroad and receive their views as political parties and presidential candidates begin positioning themselves for the 2027 elections.
