Cyrus Jirongo: 7 Passengers from Ill-Fated Climax Bus Speak to DCI as Probe Into Ex-MP’s Death Ends

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has ruled out foul play in the tragic death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo. Former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo died on December 13, 2025, after his Mercedes Benz was crashed by a Climax bus ferrying passengers. According to the DCI, Jirongo’s death was not ill-motivated as some quarters had suggested.  What are findings of DCI in Cyrus Jirongo’s death? The agency said it had gathered the accounts of all the parties involved, including the driver and conductor of the ill-fated Climax bus, seven passengers, Jirongo’s first wife, Anne Lanoi, the attendants at Eagol Petrol station and the occupants of the Toyota Probox that drove behind the deceased’s car moments before the accident. The probe was undertaken by a multi-disciplinary team, comprising homicde detectives, experts from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, and forensic specialists from the National Forensic Laboratory. Others to be interrogated were those who interacted with Jirongo on the day he died, among them National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula. “The team visited and processed the scene, secured and preserved key exhibits, documented physical evidence, and recovered CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station for review and analysis. Additionally, the bus manifest and amateur videos from the scene were obtained and subjected to forensic analysis,” the DCI said in a statement.

Which bus rescued passengers after crash that killed Jirongo? The investigators also obtained a statement from Julius Kiprotich Chelule, who drove the Climax rescue bus, registration number KCU 573A, that picked up the passengers after the crash. From the evidence reviewed so far, the circumstances of Jirongo’s death appeared to be a traffic accident with no signs of foul play, according to the DCI. Former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo (inset) died in a road crash moments after passing by Eagol Petrol Station in Naivasha. The agency hinted at the potential prosecution of the bus driver, stating that the case file would be submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for guidance upon the completion of the probe. “Upon conclusion of the remaining investigative processes, the investigation file will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for appropriate directions, including potential criminal charges against the PSV driver, in line with the available evidence,” the DCI said.

Meanwhile, the DCI cautioned members of the public and politicians against advancing conspiracy theories regarding the accident. It urged anyone with crucial information regarding the accident to present it at the expense of spinning conjectures. “The DCI extends deepest condolences to the family, relatives and friends of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo. We urge the public and political leaders to exercise restraint and refrain from making speculative or unsubstantiated statements that could prejudice the investigative process or cause undue public anxiety,” the agency said. Jirongo was laid to rest on December 30, at his native home in Lumakanda, Kakamega County. How Cyrus Jirongo met his death He died on December 13, 2025, after a fast-moving Busia-bound passenger bus collided with his Mercedes Benz along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway at Karai in Naivasha. The impact left him with severe injuries, including fractured legs, and he died instantly at the scene.  A post-mortem later revealed that blunt force trauma had caused extensive internal damage, leading to his death.
