Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has publicly expressed regret over a series of online posts he made last week about former U.S. President Donald Trump, marking the latest twist in their long-standing and often volatile feud.
In a post shared on Monday via X (formerly Twitter), Musk wrote, “I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far.”
While he didn’t specify which remarks he was referring to, the comment appears to signal a softening in tone from the outspoken tech magnate, who has previously been sharply critical of Trump’s leadership style and legacy.
The latest online spat was triggered after Trump, speaking at a campaign rally, dismissed Musk as “another guy who talks big but doesn’t deliver.”
In response, Musk fired off a string of biting retorts questioning Trump’s integrity and record as president. The exchange quickly drew attention, with reactions ranging from outrage to support—underscoring the deeply polarising nature of both men’s public personas.
Musk’s climbdown has surprised some observers, given his often impulsive online behaviour and frequent use of X to voice unfiltered opinions.
As the owner of the platform and CEO of several high-profile companies, including Tesla and SpaceX, Musk’s social media activity has outsized influence—and occasionally, real-world consequences.

Although the Tesla boss didn’t name any specific posts, his apology is being seen as a calculated step.
According to Dr. Meredith Klein, a media analyst at Columbia University, the move may be part of a broader strategy.
“Elon is playing a long game. By expressing regret, he’s not necessarily making peace with Trump, but he’s recalibrating his public image. This helps him appear above partisan fights, especially as he gains more political clout in Washington.”
The strained relationship between the two men dates back to Trump’s time in office. Musk initially joined Trump’s business advisory councils, only to resign in 2017 following the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement—a move he strongly opposed.
Since then, their interactions have been marked by intermittent jabs and clashes, especially on social media.
Trump, for his part, has been inconsistent on topics that concern Musk and his followers. Speaking to Fox News previously about the controversial Epstein case, the former president was reluctant to divulge specifics, saying: “You don’t want to affect people’s lives if it’s phoney stuff… because it’s a lot of phoney stuff with that whole world.”
