After three years of dominance in Nyanza rugby 15s, Kisii School are now targeting regional success in handball.
The school’s rugby team has won the Nyanza regional title for three consecutive seasons, establishing Kisii as a powerhouse in the sport. Inspired by that success, handball coach Clinton Kenyanya says the team is determined to make its mark at this year’s Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term One Games.
“We made our debut at the regionals last year and were eliminated in the first round,” Kenyanya said. “We gained experience and learnt valuable lessons. This time, we are better prepared and ready to compete. Our goal is to follow in the footsteps of the rugby team.”
Kenyanya identified the main competition at the regional stage, including Manyatta High School, St Mary’s School, Yala, Otaro Mixed Secondary School, and Maseno School.
“These schools are regulars at the regional level and will be strong opponents,” Kenyanya said. “But my boys are ready to go head-to-head and show that Kisii School can compete for the title.” The regionals will be hosted at Kisumu School from March 19 to 23.
Before that, Kisii must navigate the Kisii County Championships, where rivals Ndonyo Mixed Secondary School and Tabaka Boys High School await. Hosting the county tournament from March 3 to 6 is seen as an advantage.
“Playing at home gives us motivation,” Kenyanya said. “The boys are focused and eager to secure qualification for the regionals. The mood in camp is electrifying.”
Kisii began the 2026 campaign strongly at the zonal level, registering convincing wins over Nyaura 50–4 and Masongo 53–4 before narrowly beating Nyanchwa Boys 28–21. The team, along with Nyanchwa Boys, will represent the Getembe Zone at the Kisii Central Sub-County Championships.
Kenyanya plans additional friendly matches after the sub-county stage to fine-tune tactics and fitness ahead of the county and regional competitions. With preparation, confidence, and the drive to emulate the rugby team, Kisii School’s handball side is aiming to make a strong statement in Nyanza this season.
