Ng’iya Girls dominate third edition of Hellen Masengeli Open Tournament

Hosts Ng’iya Girls High School delivered a commanding performance to dominate the third edition of the Hellen Masengeli Open Tournament, clinching titles in hockey, volleyball, and netball.

The two-day event saw Ng’iya assert their strength across multiple disciplines, with only basketball slipping from their grasp. In that final, Butere Girls High School ‘B’ side defeated the hosts 35–27 to take the crown.

Ng’iya had reached the final after brushing aside Nyanza rivals Tuk Jowi Secondary School 41–14 in the semi-finals. Butere Girls ‘B’ secured their place by beating their ‘A’ side 56–28.

Ng’iya basketball coach Naftali Ambala was satisfied with the team’s performance despite the final defeat.

“It was a good tournament. We played against Butere’s main team and lost narrowly. By the time we head to the regionals in one month, the girls will be ready,” he said.

Ng’iya’s most dominant showing came in hockey, where the Nyanza regional champions and FEASSA bronze medalists went unbeaten in the round-robin stage. They recorded victories over Lwak Girls Secondary School, Butere Girls, and Aldai Girls High School before thrashing Lwak 4–0 in the classification final.

Coach Oduor Nyadida praised the team’s consistency and tipped them for greater success.

“It was a good outing. Most of the girls are in Form Three and have played together since Form One. We only lost two players from the squad that won bronze at FEASSA,” he said, expressing confidence ahead of the national and regional championships.

In volleyball, Ng’iya defeated Bondo Township Secondary School in straight sets (25–18, 25–27, 25–20). They completed the triple triumph by overpowering Siaya Institute 40–22 in the netball final.

Other disciplines saw Bondo Township win both rugby sevens and football. They beat Lwak and Ng’iya in rugby, and edged Tuk Jowi in a penalty shootout after a goalless football final.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli presided over the awards ceremony. Winners received Sh30,000, runners-up Sh25,000, and third-placed teams Sh20,000, while MVPs in each discipline earned Sh5,000.

The tournament, launched three years ago, honours Chief Principal Hellen Masengeli for her role in revitalising the school’s academic and co-curricular performance.
