A severe windstorm has left learners at Ntamichu Primary School in Meru without a classroom after tearing off the roof of an Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) structure. Meru: Strong Winds Blow Away ECDE Classroom Roof, Leaves Young Learners Stranded Facebook photos shared by blogger Cyprian Nyakundi captured the roof which was dangling from a nearby power line, rendering the classroom completely unusable. With their learning space destroyed, the affected children are now forced to study in makeshift conditions, raising concerns over their safety and comfort
. Parents and residents have expressed outrage over the situation, blaming local leaders for failing to act despite previous assurances. Particular criticism has been directed at the area Member of County Assembly (MCA), who had promised nearly three years ago to construct a modern classroom but has yet to deliver. Frustration has been further fueled by the fact that the school is located near the rural homes of high-profile politicians, including former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary and ex-Meru Governor Peter Munya. Residents argue that despite wielding political influence and holding powerful positions, these leaders have done little to improve basic infrastructure in the area.
Community members have called for immediate intervention to rebuild the classroom and provide a conducive learning environment for the young pupils. “This is an unacceptable situation. Our leaders have abandoned us, yet they make big promises every election season. Our children deserve better,” one parent lamented. As the learners continue to endure harsh learning conditions, the community is urging the county government and relevant authorities to prioritize the construction of a permanent, modern ECDE classroom to prevent similar disasters in the future.
