Motorists using Waiyaki Way should prepare for traffic disruption after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced a temporary partial closure of the Mombasa-bound lanes between Kempinski and Museum Hill Interchange.
The closure will take effect from Thursday, October 8, to Saturday, November 7, to allow for highway maintenance works along the section.
In a public notice dated October 1, KeNHA said motorists would continue using the sections that remain open and were advised to consider alternative routes to minimise delays.
The authority also urged drivers to follow the proposed traffic management plan and cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals deployed at the site.
“Normal traffic operations on the road will be restored upon completion of the works,” the notice said.
The affected section is part of Waiyaki Way, a major route connecting Nairobi’s central areas to the western outskirts and serving motorists travelling towards areas including Westlands and Kikuyu.
The latest closure comes after a series of traffic disruptions along Waiyaki Way in recent months, as motorists have encountered diversions and delays linked to road and infrastructure works along the corridor.
In June, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced the partial closure of the Nakuru-bound carriageway between Karuna Close and Westlands Roundabout to facilitate pedestrian safety works.
The closure, which ran from June 25 to September 25, was intended to allow the extension of the existing pedestrian footbridge at Dunhill Towers and construction of the proposed Fogo Gaucho–QuickMart Westlands footbridge.
KeNHA said the works were aimed at improving pedestrian safety along the highway while maintaining vehicle movement through the affected section.
The disruption followed other works along the corridor, including maintenance and construction activities on the Nairobi Expressway.
In September, MOJA Expressway Company announced maintenance and construction works on the elevated expressway deck after the Nairobi Westlands Exit.
The works ran from September 8 to September 20, during which motorists exiting at the Westlands Exit were directed to join the lower A8 road along Waiyaki Way.
The diversion increased traffic on Waiyaki Way, particularly during peak hours, as vehicles from the expressway joined the road.
Motorists reported delays during the disruption, with traffic queues extending along parts of Waiyaki Way and neighbouring roads.
KeNHA has previously advised motorists using the corridor to follow temporary traffic management measures, obey traffic signs and cooperate with police officers.
