The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) has opened applications for a full-time internship position based in Nairobi, Kenya, to support the delivery of a German-funded water resource management project in Somalia. The project, backed by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), focuses on improving policies, institutional coordination, and flood protection measures in the Juba and Shabelle river basins.
Role and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will assist with a range of project management functions, including client reporting, operational planning, and monitoring implementation progress. Administrative duties, such as preparing and following up on workshops, also form part of the role. Beyond day-to-day management tasks, the intern will be expected to support the project’s public relations work by compiling success stories and to conduct research into rigorous impact assessments and cost-benefit analyses. Those findings are intended to inform ongoing implementation and, where relevant, help shape potential follow-up financing initiatives. Who Can Apply GIZ is looking for candidates who have recently completed a Master’s degree or equivalent qualification, preferably in development cooperation, water management, climate adaptation, or development economics. Some prior experience in project management within German development cooperation, or in evidence-informed programming, is required. Fluency in both German and English at C2 level is mandatory for the role. Proficiency in MS Office and a thoughtful approach to the use of artificial intelligence tools are also listed as requirements.
Applicants must be enrolled at a university, participating in a further education programme that incorporates an internship, or have graduated no more than six months before the internship’s start date of 1 September 2026. The placement runs through to 28 February 2027. The gross monthly salary is €2,349, with an additional foreign service allowance determined by GIZ depending on the country of assignment.
