Wajir awakens early as Madaraka Day fete get underway

Preparations for this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations in Wajir gathered momentum early Monday morning as security officers, government officials and residents converged at the newly constructed Wajir Stadium for the event.

The celebrations are expected to commence earlier than usual, with security agencies completing final rehearsals and inspections to ensure the smooth running of the historic occasion.

Officers reportedly arrived at the stadium as early as 4 am to oversee preparations and conduct last-minute checks.

At the time, locals had also begun arriving at the venue, eager to witness the first-ever national holiday celebrations to be hosted in Northern Kenya.

A giant screen installed at the stadium was already operational, while personnel could be seen moving around the facility making final touches and ensuring all arrangements were in place.

A video recorded at around 6 am showed sections of the stadium already occupied by members of the public, highlighting the excitement surrounding the event.

Wajir County is hosting the 2026 Madaraka Day celebrations, marking a significant milestone in the country’s history.

The event is being held at the newly completed 10,000-seater Wajir Stadium and is expected to be led by President William Ruto alongside senior government officials, diplomats and other invited guests.

The decision to take the national celebrations to Wajir has been widely viewed as a recognition of the region’s growing importance and a demonstration of the government’s commitment to inclusive national development.

Over the past year, the government has undertaken major infrastructure projects in the county in preparation for the celebrations.

These include the upgrading and modernization of Wajir International Airport, the construction and rehabilitation of key roads, installation of street lighting and improvements in water connectivity across various parts of the region.

Officials have said the investments are intended not only to support the celebrations but also to leave behind lasting benefits for residents.

The event is taking place under the theme “Education, Skills and the Future,” with leaders expected to highlight the role of education and skills development in driving Kenya’s economic transformation and creating opportunities for young people.

Residents and business owners in Wajir have welcomed the celebrations, noting that they have already generated economic activity in the area. Hotels and guest houses have reported increased bookings as visitors from across the country arrive for the event.

Community leaders have also expressed optimism that the national attention focused on Wajir will attract further investments and accelerate development projects in the region.

Beyond the festivities, many residents view the occasion as a symbol of inclusion and national unity. For decades, Northern Kenya remained on the margins of major national events, making this year’s celebrations particularly significant.
