The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has confirmed an operational incident involving a Rubber-Tyred Gantry crane at the Port of Mombasa, saying no fatalities or serious injuries were reported.
The incident occurred on September 17, 2026, at about 3:40 pm and was immediately attended to by KPA’s safety and emergency response teams, the Authority said.
The clarification follows videos circulating on social media showing several shipping containers stacked on top of one another at the port. One of the containers appeared to have been completely crushed following the incident.
KPA said the truck tractor operator was unharmed, while the RTG operator sustained minor soft-tissue injuries to his legs.
The operator was taken to hospital for medical evaluation as a precautionary measure. He was later discharged after assessment and treatment and cleared by the attending medical team.
“We wish to assure our stakeholders and the public that the incident did not result in any fatalities or serious injuries,” KPA said in a statement issued on Friday.
The Authority said investigations into the circumstances and cause of the incident are underway.
“KPA is conducting a comprehensive review in line with its safety and incident management protocols to establish the facts and implement any necessary corrective measures,” it said.
The RTG is used in port operations to handle and stack shipping containers.
KPA said it remained committed to the safety and wellbeing of employees, stakeholders and port users, as well as the continued delivery of safe, efficient and reliable port operations.
The Authority also urged members of the public to rely on its official communication channels for information about the incident.
“We urge the public to rely on official KPA communication channels for accurate and verified information and to refrain from sharing unverified reports that may cause unnecessary alarm or misinformation,” KPA said.
The Authority thanked stakeholders for their cooperation, patience and understanding as investigations and the review of the incident continue.
