Kenya has secured a major diplomatic and technological milestone after being selected to host the fourth edition of the Responsible AI in the Military Domain (REAIM) Summit in April 2027.
Kenya becomes the first African nation and the first country in the Global South to host the summit.
The announcement was made in Geneva by Kenya’s Special Envoy on Technology Ambassador Philip Thigo, on behalf of Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, during the AI, Security and Ethics Conference.
The summit, which brings together governments, defence institutions, technology companies, academia and international organisations, focuses on ensuring the responsible development and deployment of artificial intelligence in military operations while safeguarding international peace and security.
Speaking after the announcement, Ambassador Thigo said the Nairobi summit would shift attention from policy discussions to practical implementation of responsible AI frameworks.
“The Summit will focus on practical implementation of responsible AI through capacity building, institutional readiness, international cooperation, and deeper engagement between governments, defence institutions, industry, academia and international organisations,” he said.
He added that Kenya was ready to welcome the international community to Nairobi for critical discussions on the intersection of artificial intelligence, security, ethics and global peace.
“Kenya looks forward to welcoming the global community to Nairobi to shape the crucial frameworks where military artificial intelligence meets international peace, safety, and ethics,” Thigo said.
The hosting rights mark a significant achievement for Kenya’s growing influence in global technology governance and digital diplomacy.
Thigo said the decision places Nairobi at the centre of international conversations on how emerging technologies can be deployed responsibly within defence and security sectors.
The REAIM Summit has emerged as one of the world’s leading platforms addressing the opportunities and risks associated with military applications of artificial intelligence.
Previous editions have largely been hosted in Europe and Asia, making Kenya’s selection a landmark moment for Africa’s participation in shaping global AI governance.
The 2027 summit is expected to attract senior government officials, military leaders, technology experts, researchers and policymakers from across the world, further strengthening Kenya’s position as a regional hub for innovation, diplomacy and emerging technologies.
The third REAIM Summit was held in the Spanish city of A Coruña in February 2026.
Hosted by Spain, the 2026 summit sought to move beyond broad principles and focus on practical and realistic measures for implementing responsible military AI governance.
Another key objective was to strengthen the summit’s multi-stakeholder approach by fostering cooperation among experts from different regions and disciplines.
Discussions focused on the technological, military, ethical, legal and social implications of military artificial intelligence and how countries can work together to manage emerging risks.
Kenya is now set to take over as host of the fourth REAIM Summit in April 2027, marking the first time the global gathering will be held in Africa and the wider Global South.
