Kenya Met Issues 5-Day Forecast, Predicts Showers in Select Counties Until June 24

Source: Getty Images In its latest weather outlook covering the period between Saturday, June 20, and Wednesday, June 24, the department said rainfall will mainly be experienced in parts of the Coast region, the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, as well as sections of northeastern Kenya.As many Kenyans continue to experience cooler conditions associated with the June weather season, the weatherman predicted cloudy mornings and chilly nights, particularly in highland areas.  The meteorological department advised Kenyans to keep track of daily weather updates and county-specific forecasts for more detailed information. According to the forecast issued on Friday, June 19, most parts of the country are likely to remain generally dry. However, intermittent cool and cloudy conditions are expected in some areas of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Southeastern Lowlands, the Rift Valley and Northeastern Kenya. Which parts of Kenya will experience rainfall?

Residents living in counties across the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands West of the Rift Valley and parts of the Rift Valley have been advised to prepare for occasional showers during the forecast period. The affected counties include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot. The region is expected to experience sunny intervals during most mornings, but showers are forecast in several areas during afternoons and evenings. The likelihood of rainfall is expected to increase on Tuesday and Wednesday, when some places could receive rain during both morning and afternoon hours. Highlands East of the Rift Valley, a region that includes Nairobi and several surrounding counties, are also projected to receive rainfall in parts of the The counties expected to receive light rain or showers include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi. Some areas could experience light morning rains on Saturday before conditions improve into sunny intervals on Sunday and Monday. However, rain and showers are expected to return from Tuesday, with some locations likely to receive afternoon showers extending into Wednesday. Temperatures in the region are expected to remain relatively cool, with minimum temperatures falling as low as 4°C in some areas while maximum temperatures range between 25°C and 28°C. Why is the Coast expected to be among the wettest regions? Among all regions highlighted in the forecast, the Coast is expected to experience the most frequent rainfall over the five-day period. The Kenya Meteorological Department predicted showers in Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale counties, as well as the Tana Delta area.

Some coastal areas are expected to receive showers during mornings and afternoons throughout the forecast period. On Saturday, showers are forecast over several places, making the Coast one of the wettest regions in the country over the coming days. Temperatures along the coastline are expected to remain warm, with daytime temperatures reaching between 29°C and 31°C while nighttime temperatures range from 21°C to 23°C. The Coast is forecast to be the wettest region, receiving showers during mornings and afternoons throughout much of the five days.  According to the forecast, parts of Northeastern Kenya are also expected to receive isolated rainfall despite generally sunny conditions. The forecast indicates that Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo counties could experience showers in a few places, particularly on Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Meanwhile, northwestern counties, including Turkana and Samburu, are expected to remain dry throughout the forecast period, with sunny intervals dominating both mornings and afternoons. Similarly, southeastern counties such as Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta are forecast to experience largely dry conditions accompanied by partly cloudy nights.
