The Raila Odinga International Stadium is nearing completion ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where it is expected to serve as Kenya’s flagship venue for the continental tournament, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has said.
The 60,000-seat ultra-modern facility, rising at the historic Jamhuri Grounds along Ngong Road, has entered its final phase of construction.
Major structural works have already been completed, with ongoing teams now focusing on finishing ICT systems, broadcast infrastructure, and spectator facilities in preparation for the stadium’s intended use during the continental championship.
The stadium has been purpose-built for both football and rugby, with design features aimed at enhancing the viewing experience, including stands positioned close to the field of play. Its architectural design incorporates Maasai-inspired shield and spear motifs, while the facility also integrates a hybrid playing surface and a range of modern technologies.
These include smart systems, solar energy installations, and rainwater harvesting infrastructure, which are part of the broader design approach aimed at supporting sustainability in the facility’s operations.
According to the Interior Principal Secretary, the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is also playing a key role in supporting the project’s delivery and future operations.
This includes coordination of multi-agency preparedness, security planning for events, emergency response frameworks, and crowd management systems required for a venue of international standards capable of hosting major tournaments.
