Drone race to headline US 250th independence celebrations at Dedan Kimathi University

A major technology showcase is set to take place on Friday at the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT) Main Campus in Nyeri as the United States Embassy in Kenya marks 250 years since US independence.

The Freedom 250 Festival is expected to draw hundreds of students and guests for a day centered on showcasing emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, robotics and drone engineering.

The US Embassy in Nairobi said the event is scheduled to start at 2pm at the chartered public university known for its strong emphasis on technology, engineering and innovation.

The organisers say the festival will offer hands-on demonstrations and interactive learning sessions aimed at strengthening youth skills in science and innovation.

A key attraction of the programme will be live drone races, alongside assembly challenges designed to test students’ technical ability, speed, and problem-solving skills.

Media attending the event will have opportunities to interact with student innovators, representatives from the US Embassy, and alumni of exchange programmes, with discussions expected to focus on technology, education, and workforce readiness.

The showcase is also intended to highlight how young innovators in Kenya are increasingly engaging with advanced technologies that align with global workforce demands.

The festival will conclude with a watch party for the World Cup match between the United States and Australia, blending technology engagement with a shared sporting experience.

The event also serves as a broader commemoration of American independence. The United States officially gained independence following a gradual historical process that culminated in two key milestones.

On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence, marking the official severing of political ties with Great Britain.

Later, on September 3, 1783, the Revolutionary War officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris, a development that secured universal international recognition of the United States as an independent nation.

Organisers of the Freedom 250 Festival say the DeKUT engagement reflects ongoing efforts to deepen collaboration in innovation, education and skills development between Kenya and the United States, particularly among young people preparing to enter technology-driven industries.

As anticipation builds ahead of the afternoon programme, the event is expected to provide a platform where academic learning meets practical experimentation, with drones, robotics, and artificial intelligence taking centre stage in a live demonstration of next-generation skills.

Drones, robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) are radically transforming global industries by automating complex tasks, enhancing real-time decision-making and increasing operational safety.

Together, they are redefining how humanity approaches everything from supply chain logistics and healthcare to modern conflict.

In the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, drones have fundamentally changed the conflict, acting as the primary tool for both sides to conduct surveillance, target logistics, and execute precision strikes while keeping soldiers at a safe distance.
