Ruto pushes for stronger Kenya-EU economic ties in Brussels

President William Ruto’s meeting with King Philippe of Belgium at the Royal Palace marked a significant diplomatic and strategic engagement.

The two leaders discussed strengthening bilateral relations, with a focus on trade, investment, and cooperation in key sectors including agriculture, logistics, and renewable energy.

As one of Kenya’s key European partners, Belgium expressed interest in the country’s role as a gateway to East Africa, underscoring the importance of the meeting in positioning Kenya as a regional hub for European investors.

Ruto also held talks with António Costa, President of the EU Council, in Brussels.

Their discussions centred on the Kenya–EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), which grants Kenyan exports duty-free and quota-free access to the European market.

The agreement is expected to boost Kenya’s horticulture, tea, coffee and cut-flower industries while encouraging European investment in value-added manufacturing.

Costa reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting Kenya’s economic transformation and climate resilience efforts.

The engagements carried significant implications for Kenya’s economic diplomacy.

By meeting both the Belgian monarch and the leadership of the EU Council, Ruto signalled Kenya’s intention to deepen ties with Europe, expand export opportunities and attract sustainable investment.
