Wetang’ula defends NG-CDF, urges MPs to protect fund

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has asked MPs to safeguard and strengthen the National Government Constituencies Development Fund, saying the kitty has played a key role in reducing development gaps across the country.

He said the fund has transformed rural communities and enabled thousands of needy students to access education and should be preserved.

“I urge MPs to protect the NG-CDF at all costs and even strengthen it for the benefit of our people, especially those living in rural areas,” Wetang’ula said.

The fund has faced several onslaughts in court, with judges declaring the kitty unconstitutional under the doctrine of separation of powers.

This saw the fund’s name changed from Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) to circumvent the court ruling and continue operating.

The fund is limited to supporting education, security, environment and sports.

Wetang’ula said the fund has transformed rural areas through tangible development projects and given hope to needy students by supporting their education at all levels.

The Ford Kenya leader rallied the Western region to support President William Ruto’s re-election in 2027, saying the area had benefited from national government projects and appointments.

Wetang’ula said Ruto had tried to equalise the country by fairly distributing development projects across Kenya, regardless of how regions voted in the last election.

“President Ruto is the only head of state who has spread development projects across the country irrespective of voting patterns,” he said.

Wetang’ula was speaking at Mikuva Secondary School in Webuye East constituency, Bungoma county, during the handover of a school bus purchased through the NG-CDF on Friday.

The event was attended by Senate Chief Whip and Bungoma Senator David Wakoli, Bungoma Woman MP Catherine Wambilianga and Webuye East MP Martin Pepela, who hailed President Ruto’s development agenda.

Wetang’ula said no elected leader can implement meaningful development in five years.

Leaders allied to the Kenya Kwanza administration in Western Kenya have intensified efforts to consolidate support for President Ruto’s re-election as they seek to loosen ODM’s grip on the region.
