Kenyan comedian and media personality Sande Bush has stirred debate online after criticising French President Emmanuel Macron over his remarks during a youth forum held at the University of Nairobi on Monday.
French President Emmanuel MacronDr Ofweneke Questions Macron’s Approach
Following the event, Dr Ofweneke took to social media to express discomfort with the French president’s tone while addressing the audience.
“Macron must understand that we are not fighting for independence anymore, and his tone during this visit is a little bit weird!!” the comedian wrote on Instagram.
His statement sparked mixed reactions among Kenyans online. Some agreed with his sentiments, arguing that African audiences should not be addressed in what they viewed as a harsh or patronising tone by foreign leaders.
Others, however, defended Macron, saying the audience had become disruptive during an important discussion and that the president was justified in calling for order and respect.
Macron Interrupts Proceedings Over Audience Noise
The moment happened after sections of the audience interrupted a speaker with loud side conversations and noise during a panel discussion.
Macron briefly stopped proceedings and directly addressed attendees from the stage.
“Excuse me, everybody. Hey, hey, hey! I’m sorry, guys, but it’s impossible to speak about culture, to have people like that super inspired coming here, making a speech with such a noise,” Macron said.
The French president then urged audience members to either pay attention or continue their conversations outside the venue.
“This is a total lack of respect. So I suggest, if you want to have bilaterals or speak about something else, you have bilateral rooms, or you go outside.”
Dr OfwenekeSummit Focuses on Youth and Partnerships
The Africa Forward Summit focused heavily on youth innovation, technology, climate action and creative industries. The University of Nairobi forum particularly targeted conversations around culture, leadership and opportunities for young Africans.
Macron’s Kenya visit also included bilateral talks with President William Ruto and discussions around trade, transport, renewable energy and education partnerships between Kenya and France.
