Exposed: Why Nairobi Thieves are Targeting Toyota Harrier Grilles

On 11 May 2026, a dashcam video began circulating across Kenyan social media, sparking a national conversation about vehicle security.

The footage captured three men swiping the front grille of a United Nations (UN) plated Toyota Harrier. The car was stuck in heavy traffic on Parklands Road. The entire theft took less than sixty seconds.

This incident has made “Harrier Grille” a viral topic. It highlights a growing syndicate in Nairobi targeting high-end car accessories during peak hours. Police have since arrested three suspects in Mlango Kubwa in connection with the viral video.

The “Mobile Gold” Syndrome

The latest Toyota Harrier models, specifically the 2020-2024 (MXUA80) series, are the primary targets. These grilles are uniquely designed and carry a high price tag. In the second-hand market, they are often referred to as “mobile gold.”

“In Nairobi, that tiny thing is basically mobile gold. Thieves are removing them in traffic in seconds, and by the time you notice, the guy has vanished like a bad loan,” one X user noted.

Replacing a stolen grille is a costly affair. According to online car accessories sellers, new standard grille for the MXUA80 model costs between KES 60,000 and KES 68,000.

Used “Ex-Japan” versions fetch between KES 45,000 and KES 55,000. Some owners report that the total cost of replacement can reach KES 100,000.

A Lucrative Trade for Thieves

Thieves are drawn to these parts because they are easy to resell. The high demand in the spare parts market ensures a quick turnaround. Beyond grilles, the syndicate also targets Harrier front lights, which can sell for KES 25,000 each.

The thefts are most frequent in predictable traffic bottlenecks. Hotspots include Parklands Road, Limuru Road, and junctions near the University of Nairobi. However, the danger is not limited to the road.

Recent CCTV footage also captured a Toyota Harrier grille being stolen from a residential compound in Kilimani.

Protecting the Asset

Motorists are being urged to take proactive measures to secure their vehicles. The trend of “sourcing” parts often leads back to another victim’s car. To counter this, many owners are now “riveting” their grilles. Others are installing mesh protectors to make quick removal more difficult for thieves.

In response to the alarming reports of Toyota Harrier grilles being snatched even from private residential compounds, content creator Kinuthia shared a humorous yet proactive measure to safeguard his vehicle.

Reacting to the trend on social media, he jokingly told his followers that he would resort to “sleeping with it” to ensure the part isn’t stolen from his parking spot overnight.

He posted pictures of him, lying on bed with Toyota Harrier grille.

The message on social media is clear: do not wait until you lose an expensive part in a minute of traffic. In Nairobi, even a car badge now requires extra security.
