Lavinia and Michelle Osbourne have always been close. Born in Nottingham in 1976, they shared a womb, a birthday, and a difficult childhood. For 45 years, they believed they were non-identical twins born to the same parents.
However, a home DNA test recently shattered everything they thought they knew. The results revealed that while they share the same mother, they have two different biological fathers. This makes them the first documented case of its kind in British history.
A biological rarity
The technical name for their condition is heteropaternal superfecundation. It is a vanishingly rare event. For it to happen, a woman must release two eggs during the same menstrual cycle. Both eggs must then be fertilised by different men during the same fertile window.
“It’s super weird, super odd, super rare,” quoted The Guardian publication.
There are fewer than 20 documented cases of this phenomenon worldwide. Because it is so rare, the twins are technically half-sisters despite being born just minutes apart.
The day everything changed
According to the Guardian publication, Michelle had long doubted that the man their mother identified as their father, James, was her biological parent. In late 2021, she decided to take an Ancestry DNA test to find the truth.
The results arrived on 14 February 2022—the very same day their mother passed away from early-onset dementia. The data confirmed Michelle’s suspicions: James was not her father.
