Met to Kenyans: Morning rains, afternoon showers and thunderstorms ahead

Kenyans should brace for continued rainfall and thunderstorms across several parts of the country this week, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department.

The forecast covers the period from March 31 to April 6, 2026, and highlights varied weather patterns across regions.

The department has warned that areas in the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, the South Rift Valley, and North-eastern Kenya are likely to experience persistent showers.

“Morning rains, afternoon showers and thunderstorms, and occasional night showers are expected in many regions,” the department said.

Residents around Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley can anticipate afternoon showers and thunderstorms, accompanied by occasional night rainfall.

Meanwhile, the Highlands east of the Rift Valley are expected to have cloudy mornings with light rains, followed by sunny intervals, and afternoon and night showers.

In North-eastern and North-western Kenya, the forecast predicts occasional rainfall throughout the day and night. Coastal areas and the South-eastern Lowlands are likely to see scattered showers in the morning, afternoon, and night.

Temperature variations are also expected across the country. Coastal regions, the South-eastern Lowlands, and parts of North-eastern and North-western Kenya are set to experience daytime highs above 30°C.

In contrast, cool nights with temperatures dropping below 10°C are likely in parts of the Central Highlands, Rift Valley, Western Kenya, and areas near Mt. Kilimanjaro.

For city-specific forecasts, Nairobi is expected to record daytime temperatures of 27°C and night lows of 14°C. Mombasa will experience highs of 32°C and lows of 24°C, while Kisumu is forecast at 30°C during the day and 18°C at night. Nakuru will see 26°C by day and 12°C at night, Eldoret 23°C and 11°C, and Mandera will reach a scorching 38°C with nighttime lows of 24°C.

The department emphasised that county-level weather may vary and urged residents to check detailed forecasts for their specific areas. “County-level weather varies! Check your county forecast here,” it advised, providing a link to its online portal.

Experts advise that residents plan their daily activities with the weather in mind, particularly in areas prone to heavy rains and thunderstorms.

Flash floods and slippery roads remain a concern in low-lying and flood-prone regions. Farmers, commuters, and travellers are urged to take necessary precautions to minimise disruption.

With unpredictable rainfall patterns, Kenyans are encouraged to remain updated on daily forecasts, especially as the week progresses. The Meteorological Department continues to monitor weather systems and will provide updates as necessary to ensure public safety.
