Cops arrest two, recover 213 stolen phones in Trans Nzoia

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested two suspects and recovered 213 phones in Lessos, Trena Nzoia county.

DCI said officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) and Matisi police station officers raided a residence near Airport Church in Lessos and arrested the two.

The suspects, linked to the handling of stolen mobile phones, were also found with a mobile phone reprogramming device.

“A total of 213 mobile phones of assorted makes and models were recovered, alongside a Pandora machine suspected to be used in mobile phone reprogramming and three HP laptops,” the DCI said.

The directorate said the suspects are in police custody and will be arraigned upon the completion of investigations.

DCI said the recovered items were secured as exhibits to undergo forensic analysis.

“Investigations are ongoing to establish the source of the devices and identify other members of the network,” it said.

The directorate pledged its dedication to stopping organised crime and fighting the unlawful sale of electronics.
“The DCI reiterates its commitment to dismantling organised criminal networks and curbing the illegal trade in electronic devices.”
It also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities through the established reporting channels.
This bust comes a few days after detectives raided a phone black market shop disguised as a cosmetics shop in Runda.

During a thorough search of the shop, detectives uncovered a large quantity of suspected electronic devices.

The recovered items included 65 functional mobile phones, seven laptops and 52 dismantled mobile phones.

“When confronted and interrogated about the recovered items, the suspects were unable to provide any credible or satisfactory explanation regarding the ownership or source of the electronics,” DCI said.

The directorate said one of the recovered phones was identified as a device violently snatched from a victim by unknown suspects at the Ruaka stage.
The DCI said the crackdown provided detectives with a crucial link between the suspects and a broader network of mobile phone theft cases in the area.
