Father Christmas, also known as Santa Claus, is a legendary figure associated with Christmas gift-giving.
His modern image is based on St Nicholas, a 4th-century Christian bishop from Myra (in present-day Turkey) known for helping the poor and giving gifts in secret.
Over time, European traditions blended with folklore, especially in Britain, where Father Christmas symbolised festive cheer rather than gift-giving. In the 19th century, these traditions merged, shaping today’s Santa figure.
He is commonly depicted as a cheerful, bearded man in red, delivering gifts to children on Christmas Eve as a symbol of generosity and goodwill.
