What skills are crucial for career success?

Hi Chris,

I’m coming towards the end of college life and looking forward to finding a job soon. So, what are the skills I should be acquiring now to ensure that my career starts off well?

Critical Work Skills

Chris says,

Hi Critical Work Skills!

Well done for realising that you need more than just qualifications for a successful career!

The first thing you need is to have a paid job right now! Almost anything will do: waitressing, cooking in a fast-food restaurant, serving in a shop, you name it. Already having a job in college really impresses potential employers because it shows that you can get up in the morning, work in a team, follow instructions and so on.

And after that?

Work on understanding your emotions better and other people. You’ll quickly become better at managing yourself and predicting how others will behave. That will improve your performance at work, help you to have better relationships and you’ll also be happier and less stressed.

Next is time management: understanding the difference between important and urgent so that those little things that ‘must’ be done right now no longer get in the way of the things that really matter.

Then there’s learning to listen. Truly listening means learning to suspend your own judgment and focusing instead on understanding the other person’s point of view.

Learn when to seek help because recognising when you’re facing a critical issue and having the courage to ask for help is an extremely valuable skill. Most people wait until it’s far too late.

Read about emotional intelligence and time management. Study body language. Go on courses to improve your impact and communication skills and your career will really start well!

All the best,

Chris
