The body of one of the men who were swept by flash floods was recovered meters away downstream in Isiolo Town.

The incident happened at the KMC Bridge during Friday’s heavy downpour.

Police said the body of Paul Gitonga, who was the driver of a car that was swept away in the incident, was recovered on Sunday several kilometres downstream in Lowangishu.

Search and rescue teams are still combing the area for another missing man believed to have been swept away in the same incident.

Soko Mjinga and Safi Estates were hit hard by the floods.

Response teams are combing the area to evacuate and attend to those affected.

The vehicle belonged to a local Member of County Assembly (MCA) and was en route to Isiolo at the time of the incident.

Police Spokesperson Michale Muchiri confirmed the incident and said it happened at the flooded KMC Bridge when the three were crossing to the other side near a police station in Isiolo.

It was established that the vehicle was swept nearly two kilometres downstream before being recovered in a badly damaged state.

In Safi Estate, several residents trapped inside their homes due to flooding were successfully rescued and evacuated to safer grounds.

Officials are currently conducting a detailed assessment to establish the number of livestock lost and the extent of property damage caused by the flash floods.

Emergency response teams remain on high alert as heavy rains continue to pound the region.

Governor Abdi Guyo said the floods caused major damage, displacing families and disrupting lives across several areas.

“The County Government assures all residents of our full commitment. Emergency teams are rescuing stranded individuals, relocating families, and distributing food and supplies. We urge everyone, especially in flood-prone zones, to stay alert and follow all safety advisories,” he said.

He said teams are compiling a detailed damage report to guide relief and recovery efforts.

“Plans are underway for temporary shelters, medical aid, food support, and infrastructure repairs.”

The Kenya Meteorological Department predicted that showers and thunderstorms will continue for the remaining part of the weekend in the North-eastern region, including the counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo.
