Telvin Mburu and Benson Kana are both jobless days after saving the life of a woman who fell ill in their matatu. Benson Kana and Telvin Mburu speaking to Viola Nekesa during a hospital visit. Why did the Rongai matatu owner sack crew? As soon as the makanga and driver learnt that the young woman was ailing, they administered first aid, rushed her to the hospital for treatment and stayed with her until she became better. After saving Viola Nekesa’s life, the matatu crew also visited her in the hospital to gauge her progress as she had experienced breathing problems.
. Once the story hit the headlines, the public was so touched that they hailed the two for taking care of Viola, and her gratitude on live radio brought many people to tears. Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Telvin said that they were surprised to see their matatu being taken away, and the owner told them not to report to work anymore. According to Telvin, he lives in Kasarani and usually wakes up at 3.30am in the morning to go and start his day, which starts as early as 4am. How much do matatus make in a day? “I didn’t understand; we were just told not to report to work the following day. On that day, we did delay taking Viola to hospital and I suspect that the loss of profits for the day may have contributed in us being sacked,” he said. “Normally, a matatu crew is supposed to turn in KSh 10,000 as profits for the day and on that day we managed KSh 13,000 so I don’t kwow what happened,” they added.
Telvin decried how they were sent away without any notice to look for another job. “Benson is even sick, his blood pressure shot up after learning that his source of livelihood had been unceremoniously cut off,” said Telvin. Telvin said that he is educated up to Form Four and would appreciate any leads to new opportunities for himself and driver Benson.
