Ed Sheeran gears up for genre-spanning new album “Play”

Global pop artist Ed Sheeran is preparing to release his eighth studio album, “Play”, promising fans a vibrant and eclectic musical journey.

In a recent interview, the singer-songwriter revealed that the album will showcase a wide variety of sounds, and fans can expect a steady stream of singles leading up to its full release.

Speaking on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Sheeran shared insights into the creative process behind “Play”, describing the project as a celebration of musical diversity and experimentation.

“The album is so broad,” he said. “I didn’t want to just be like, ‘Here’s the single. Here’s the album.’ There’s music coming every two, three weeks,” he said.

The rollout began with the release of “Azizam,” a track blending global influences and produced by Persian hitmaker Ilya.

It will soon be followed by “Old Phone,” a song Sheeran describes as rooted in the Nashville country tradition.

He previewed the track during a recent performance on The Tonight Show, showcasing the genre-blending direction “Play” is set to take.

Reflecting on the album’s experimental nature, Sheeran said he adopted a more open-minded approach while recording.

“I’ve been more explorative with this album. I had an attitude of ‘Why not?’ and didn’t feel the need to stay in a box,” he explained. “I lived in India for a bit and worked with Indian musicians and producers… and the record has moments from all over the world.”

True to its name, “Play” promises a playful and celebratory tone, marking a clear departure from the introspective and somber themes of Sheeran’s previous two albums, “− (Subtract)” and “Autumn Variations”, both released in 2023.

The two albums, which peaked at No. 2 and No. 4 on the Billboard 200, explored themes of grief and personal struggle.

“In contrast to those records, “Play” had to feel bright, colorful, and fun,” Sheeran said. “After everything—grief, heavy subjects—I needed something that felt exciting. From playing St. Patrick’s Day shows to performing at Tootsie’s in Nashville and embracing the New Orleans vibe, this album reflects all of that energy.”

An official release date for “Play” has yet to be announced.
