Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna is known for his sharp tongue and debating skills.
In the political arena and on national television, he rarely loses an argument. However, the Senator revealed that life at home follows a very different script.
Speaking on the Mic Cheque podcast, Sifuna shared rare details about his marriage and his wife’s impressive professional background.
A House of Two Lawyers
Both Sifuna and his wife are lawyers by profession. Despite his high-profile status, Sifuna admitted that he does not challenge his wife when they are at home. He described her as being “way smarter” than him, noting that she holds a Master’s degree.
“I don’t even argue,” Sifuna told the podcast hosts. He explained that in their house, he prefers to agree with her to maintain a happy life.
“She is way smarter than I, anyway. I don’t even argue. You just agree to what she says. She is a lawyer, she has a Master’s degree, she’s a writer, and she was a KWS prosecutor,” Sifuna opened up.
From Manyani to the Courtroom
Sifuna went deeper, revealing that his wife is an environmental lawyer. Before her current role, she served as a prosecutor for the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). This career path was unexpected for someone who grew up as the daughter of a Member of Parliament.
Sifuna noted that she grew up in a comfortable environment, making her decision to join the KWS even more surprising to him. He admitted he initially found it hard to picture her in such a rugged role.
The Senator recalled the time she went for KWS training at the Manyani camp. He joked about how much weight she lost during the rigorous programme.
He mentioned that as a Luhya man, he pays close attention to health and weight, even keeping a bathroom scale near the door to monitor such changes.
The Only One with a Firearm
One of the most surprising revelations was about safety and security within their household. Because of her specialised training with the KWS, Sifuna’s wife is the only person in their home who knows how to handle a firearm.
“She’s the only one in the house who knows how to use firearms, so this is not a person that you should argue with,” he joked.
The Senator highlighted the contrast between his public role as a lawmaker and the reality of his domestic life. While he represents the people of Nairobi in the Senate, he acknowledges his wife’s unique skills and authority at home.
A Stable Foundation
According to Sifuna, having a partner who is stable is essential for someone in his position. The life of a high-ranking politician in Kenya is often chaotic and demanding.
He suggested that his wife provide the necessary balance to help him navigate the pressures of his career.
Edwin Sifuna has served as the Senator for Nairobi County since the 2022 General Election. He also holds the influential position of Secretary General for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
He is a graduate of the University of Nairobi and is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. His wife, who maintains a lower public profile, continues to practice as an environmental law expert.
