Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has opened a new regional office in Nairobi. . Why Gates Foundation opened office in Nairobi Prime Cabinet Secretary (CS) Musalia Mudavadi graced the launching of the office on Friday, November 15. . Mudavadi said the Gates Foundation joins numerous international organisations based in Nairobi to support areas aligned with Kenya’s development goals. The office will expand and enhance the Foundation’s work in healthcare, agriculture and ICT in Kenya.
“These include advancing health priorities, increasing the productivity of smallholder farmers, deepening financial inclusion and supporting women’s & communities’ economic empowerment. Together, these partnerships contribute to a healthier, more prosperous future for all Kenyans,” Mudavadi explained. Kenya grants Gates Foundation special status In October, the Kenyan government granted the Gates Foundation expatriates special diplomatic privileges and immunity.
In legal notice number 157 of October 4, 2024, the CS for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, exercised the powers conferred by section I of the Privileges and Immunities Act to confer special status on the foundation. In the notice, Mudavadi stated that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is a charitable trust fighting poverty, disease, and inequality in over 140 countries globally. Kenya entered into an agreement for cooperation with the foundation, and hence, it’s declared to be a beneficiary of section 11 of the Privileges and Immunities Act.

On Tuesday, November 15, 2022, Bill Gates, one of the world’s wealthiest men, arrived in Kenya for a series of meetings with students, farmers, and government officials. Gates expressed excitement at seeing the dramatic transformation the country had undergone since his last visit. He expounded on the purpose of his visit, noting that he is interested in health and climate change matters. During his visit, he endorsed the growth and consumption of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).
