The Meaning Behind Yesu wa Tongaren’s Cockerel Gift to Wajackoyah

A surprising meeting has taken place between former presidential candidate and lawyer George Wajackoyah and the controversial spiritual leader Eliud Wekesa, widely known as Yesu wa Tongaren.

The encounter, which took place in Yesu wa Tongaren’s shrine, saw the self-proclaimed messiah gift the lawyer a live cock, locally known as an ‘itaywa’.

The gesture from Yesu wa Tongaren to Wajackoyah is laden with symbolism. In some local traditions, a cock is a significant gift, often representing respect or gratitude.

“Visiting Yesu Wa Tongaren this afternoon. Yesu gifted me with Itaywa. Tongaren is the place to be, Wajackoyah posted a picture of him receiving the cockerel.

It has sparked a mix of reactions and discussions across social media. Many have noted the unusual pairing of the two public figures.

The Prophet’s Past Legal Battles

The meeting holds a deeper meaning when viewed against the backdrop of Yesu wa Tongaren’s past legal troubles.

In May 2023, the spiritual leader was arrested and detained by Bungoma police for five days as authorities investigated his New Jerusalem Church for alleged radical teachings.

The arrest came during a period of heightened scrutiny of religious movements in Kenya.

After the prosecution failed to produce any evidence, Wekesa was set free by a Bungoma court. It was during this period that George Wajackoyah publicly offered his legal support, standing alongside the spiritual leader in court.

Wekesa publicly thanked Wajackoyah for his support, stating that he was a “godsend.”

“I had earlier said my lawyers would be the sun and the moon, but God came through and placed a rainbow on my side in the form of Prof Wajackoya, who has come today to stand with me,” Wekesa said after his release.

The Intersection of Law and Faith

The recent meeting and gift of the cock appear to be a continuation of the bond formed during the legal proceedings.

“Visiting Yesu Wa Tongaren. I once asked the court to produce the real Jesus if it wasn’t him. The prosecution failed and the magistrate freed him,” Wajackoyah recalled in another post.

The images of the meeting have been widely circulated online, with many observers commenting on the unexpected friendship.

The gift of the cock can be seen as a humble yet powerful expression of gratitude from a man who felt vindicated by the legal system, thanks to the help of a prominent lawyer.
