About 200 Mama Mboga and other traders in Nandi County are set to benefit from improved trading facilities following the handover of the Maraba Modern Market, as the Government expands investments in markets, electricity connectivity and roads to boost local economic activity.
President William Ruto handed over the facility during a development tour of Tinderet Constituency, noting that the market provides traders with modern, decent and dignified spaces to conduct business.
The facility also includes an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) hub designed to equip young people with digital skills and expand their access to online business and e-commerce opportunities.
The Maraba market is part of a KSh1.5 billion investment to construct 15 modern markets across Nandi County, aimed at improving trading conditions for small-scale entrepreneurs and supporting the growth of grassroots businesses.
Beyond market infrastructure, the Government is expanding electricity access to households and businesses across the county.
During the tour, President Ruto launched the KSh55 million Tinderet Last Mile Electricity Connectivity Project, which is expected to connect approximately 4,000 households to electricity.
The project falls under a wider KSh2.1 billion programme targeting 23,000 households across Nandi County.
Expanded electricity connectivity is expected to support small businesses, improve household welfare and create opportunities for economic activity in rural communities.
The President also announced a KSh20 billion investment in the construction of 350 kilometres of roads across Nandi County, with the aim of improving transport, facilitating the movement of agricultural produce and connecting communities to markets.
As part of the road development programme, he inspected the 24-kilometre Maraba-Kebeneti and Timboroa-Kopere roads in Tinderet Constituency.
He also broke ground for the construction of the 17-kilometre Labuiywo-Kitechegaa/Kapkoros-Koisagat road at a cost of KSh1.3 billion.
Once completed, the road will strengthen connections between the area, Nandi Hills and neighbouring Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot counties, easing the movement of people and agricultural produce across the region.
The combined investments in markets, electricity and roads are expected to improve access to essential infrastructure, strengthen local trade and create opportunities for businesses and households.
For traders, farmers and rural communities, the projects are intended to address practical barriers to economic participation by providing better trading spaces, improved access to electricity and more reliable road connections to markets and services.
