Kenyans Return to Skai Jackson’s TikTok to Revive ‘Mirror’ Row

Kenyans have returned to Skai Jackson’s TikTok comment section, reviving the row over her remarks about Kenya.

The American actress switched off her comments after the backlash. Since she reopened them, users have filled the section with jokes about the incident.

What she said

During a livestream, Jackson claimed Kenyans did not have mirrors. She told a story about giving children mirrors and said they were amazed because they had never seen one.

In a clip that went viral, she said “mirrors are very expensive”. She added that many children she met had never seen their reflections until they looked at her phone.

“I really, really enjoyed my time in Kenya.” — Skai Jackson, in her apology.

The apology

Jackson apologized in a video shared on Sunday, 19 July 2026. She said her words were based on one visit in 2018 to a small village. She said the details came from conversations with teachers and children there.

She said she later realised people had taken her words as a statement about the whole country.

“I did not mean any disrespect by it.” — Skai Jackson

She said she “genuinely enjoyed” her trip. She also asked Kenyans to forgive her and said she was not trying to be funny.
