The officer, who had reported for duty on Monday afternoon, was assigned duties alongside her fellow officer before the pair proceeded with their normal shift.
Confirming the incident, Kisii Central Sub-County Police Commander (OCPD) Musa Omari Imamai said the two officers later returned to the station during the night.
The deceased, who has since been identified as Bosibori requested permission, saying she was going to the washroom, before walking into an unused communications office and locking the door behind her.
Hours later, after fellow officers were unable to reach her, they forced the office door open, only to find her dead from what police believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.
The heartbreaking discovery has cast a sombre mood over the station, with officers struggling to come to terms with the loss of one of their own.
Imamai said the officer, 42, had not exhibited any visible signs of emotional distress while on duty and had not left behind a note or any indication of what may have driven him to take the fatal step.
The body has been transferred to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination as detectives continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
The incident has once again brought into focus growing concerns over the mental well-being of law enforcement officers, even as investigators work to establish the events leading to the officer’s death.
