Lupita Nyong’o Responds to Elon Musk Criticizing Her ‘White Woman’ Role in Odyssey Film

Kenyan-born Mexican actress Lupita Nyong’o has finally addressed the public row surrounding her latest film role. The Oscar winner is set to star as Helen of Troy in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey.

The casting announcement, which was made earlier this month, sparked an immediate wave of online debate. Much of the criticism focused on the decision to cast a Black woman as a character traditionally depicted as white in ancient Greek mythology.

Musk Joins the Backlash

The controversy gained significant traction when Tesla CEO Elon Musk weighed in on the discussion. Musk responded to a post by conservative commentator Matt Walsh on X (formerly Twitter).

Walsh had argued that Nolan cast Nyong’o to avoid accusations of racism. Musk agreed with this sentiment, replying simply with the word “true.” He later expanded on his views in a separate post.

Musk argued that casting a Black woman in a foundational work of European literature is fundamentally wrong. He compared the move to casting a White man to play Shaka Zulu.

“I agree that she is beautiful, but casting a Black woman to play a White woman in a foundational work of European literature is no righter than casting a White man to play Shaka Zulu!” Musk tweeted.

Musk further alleged that Nolan “desecrated” the source material to ensure the film would be “eligible for an Academy Award.”

A Focus on Character Over Appearance

Speaking in a recent interview with Elle, Nyong’o made it clear that she is not interested in defending her casting. Instead, she is focusing on the depth of the role. She told the magazine that beauty is not something that can be performed.

“I’m not spending my time thinking of a defence. The criticism will exist whether I engage with it or not.” — Lupita Nyong’o.

The actress explained that she wants to understand who a character is beyond their physical looks. She noted that because The Odyssey is such a well-known and studied text, there are endless ways to interpret it.

“I want to know who a character is. What is beyond beauty? What is beyond looks?” she said during the chat. Nyong’o added that she relies on the director’s script as the primary source for her performance.

A “Representative” Vision

Despite the harsh remarks from figures like Musk and Walsh, Nyong’o remains supportive of Christopher Nolan’s vision for the film. She described the epic as a “mythological story” rather than a strict historical record.

Nyong’o also highlighted that the film’s cast is intended to be representative of the world. This approach to casting has become a central point of contention for critics who believe historical and mythological figures should adhere to traditional racial depictions.

The film set to be out on July, remains one of the most anticipated upcoming releases in Hollywood.
