Kenyan Club Host Ciggie Johnson Criticizes Artists for Provocative Religious Imagery

Club host and digital creator Ciggie Johnson has sparked a fresh debate  after criticising a section of Kenyan musicians over what he described as “blasphemous” references to God in their music. His remarks, shared online, have drawn attention to the intersection of religion, creativity, and freedom of expression within the country’s evolving music scene.

Concerns Over Religious References

Johnson questioned what he sees as a growing trend of artists using religious imagery in provocative ways. He argued that some lyrics go beyond artistic expression and cross into disrespect.

“When a musician… can blaspheme the name of the Almighty God… people ignore it because they call it poetry,” he said.
He specifically took issue with lyrics that attach sexual imagery to religious themes, suggesting that such content risks offending believers.
“You are talking about God in a sexual way… poetically explaining things that shouldn’t be said.”
In some of his remarks, he referenced artists such as Scar Mkadinali and Odi Wa Murang’a, accusing them of including controversial religious references in their music.

A Wider Industry Debate

The comments have fed into a broader and long-standing conversation within the music industry. Artists often rely on metaphor and symbolism, sometimes drawing from religion to convey deeper meaning.

However, critics argue that such creative freedom has limits, particularly in a society where religion remains influential.

“You can be poetically connected to music without speaking… about God in a disrespectful way,” Johnson said.
