Team Kenya chases Indoor redemption on global stage this weekend

Team Kenya will be keen to fire the opening shot in its hunt for global glory in the 2026 campaign as the World Indoor Championships get underway today in Kujawy-Pomerania, Poland, aiming to make an early statement at the season’s first major showpiece.

In the all-time Indoor medal standings, Kenya sits 14th, having accumulated 42 medals (10 gold, 15 silver and 17 bronze).
The United States leads the table with a staggering 304 medals, ahead of Russia (145) and Ethiopia (68).
However, recent outings have painted a sobering picture for the long-distance powerhouse.
At the 2024 edition in Glasgow, Scotland, Kenya managed just a solitary bronze through Beatrice Chepkoech in the women’s 3,000m, while last year’s campaign in Nanjing, China, ended in a medal drought.
This year’s three-day extravaganza, running from today to Sunday, offers a fresh canvas for Kenya with a formidable squad of eight athletes tasked with spearheading the nation’s charge.
Leading the charge are national indoor 400m record holders Mercy Oketch and Brian Tinega. They are joined by Rosemary Longisa, Noah Kibet and Gladys Chepng’etich in the 800m, Festus Lagat and Susan Ejore in the 1,500m, and Jacob Krop in the 3,000m — a balanced mix of youth, experience and proven pedigree.
Oketch and Tinega, both from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), head into the championships riding a wave of red-hot form.
On February 8, Oketch obliterated the national indoor 400m record at the Meeting Metz in France, clocking a blistering 51.53 seconds to storm to victory and become the first Kenyan woman to dip under the 52-second barrier.
She erased the long-standing mark of 53.34 set by Ruth Waithera in 1984. That record added to her national record in the outdoor, where she set a mark of 50.14 set at the 2025 Kip Keino Classic.
Her indoor campaign in 2026 has been impressive, having opened the year with victory at the Internationales Leichtathletik meet in Germany (52.98) before a podium finish at the Madrid World Indoor Tour Gold (52.25).
However, the Kujawy showdown presents a different beast altogether.  Oketch will line up against a stacked field featuring defending champion Amber Anning of Great Britain, American Alexis Holmes and Norway’s Henriette Jager.
Tinega has also been rewriting the record books.
On February 28, he smashed the men’s indoor 400m national record, clocking 45.68 to finish second at the Big 12 meeting in Texas, eclipsing Charles Gitonga’s 1995 mark of 45.98.
His consistency in the Indoor circuit this year has been equally impressive, highlighted by a 46.44-second-place finish at the New Mexico Collegiate meet.
In Poland, he will lock horns with some of the globe’s fastest sprinters, including Canada’s Christopher Morales-Williams and American Khaleb McRae.
In the two-lap event, 20-year-old Longisa, a student at Washington State University, will be eager to announce herself on the world stage.
She currently ranks third-fastest Kenyan woman in history over the indoor mile, behind Susan Ejore (4:20.61) and Dorcus Ewoi (4:22.39).
But the road to the podium is anything but easy. Standing in her way is world record holder Keely Hodgkinson, alongside Britain’s Georgia Hunter Bell and Switzerland’s Audrey Werro.
On the men’s side, Noah Kibet returns with unfinished business, eyeing an upgrade from the silver medal he claimed at the 2022 World Indoor Championships in Belgrade.
Olympian Susan Ejore leads Kenya’s assault in the women’s 1,500m, where she faces a formidable cast led by Olympic silver medallist Jessica Hull, Britain’s Georgia Bell and Ethiopia’s Birke Haylom.
In the men’s 1,500m, Festus Lagat will test his mettle against world champion Isaac Nader of Portugal and the Netherlands’ Samuel Chapple.
Meanwhile, Jacob Krop, the 2022 world 5,000m silver medallist, carries Kenya’s hopes in the 3,000m. He steps onto the track against a high-calibre field that includes American Olympic 1,500m champion Cole Hocker and Australian star Cameron Myers.
