Kenyan nurse and content creator Nurse Judy has been left frustrated after spending more than KSh105,000 on moving services in the United States, despite doing much of the packing work herself.
Judy took to social media to express her disappointment with the movers, revealing that she ended up paying a total of $816 (approximately KSh105,000) for the service.
‘A Big Scam!’
According to Nurse Judy, the movers charged her based on the number of hours they spent working, a pricing model she now says made the moving experience unnecessarily expensive.
She explained that she deliberately chose not to pay for packing services because she feared the movers would take even longer and increase her bill.
“Aki America wewe. A big scam!” she lamented, explaining that she had packed her belongings herself before the movers arrived.
However, she claimed the workers still took their time when handling items that needed to be dismantled and wrapped.
Movers Took Nearly Six Hours
Judy said the movers arrived at her home at around 8:30 a.m. and only completed the job at approximately 2:16 p.m.
During the process, she even joined them in loading the truck, believing her assistance would help speed things up.
Instead, she said she ended up exhausted while feeling that the work was still moving slowly.
She alleged that because she was being charged by the hour, the movers appeared to take their time, particularly when loading and later unloading her belongings at a storage facility.
“I helped them load the truck, even nikidhani nawasaidia ndo iende haraka, wapi? Nilichoka tu bure,” she said.
‘I Love Being Paid Per Hour’
Judy admitted that while she enjoys being paid by the hour when she is the one working, she dislikes the arrangement when she is the customer.
“I love being paid ‘per hour’ myself, but I hate when I have to pay for a service per hour!” she remarked.
The $816 bill included the movers’ labour, truck charges and other additional costs.
Her experience has since sparked a familiar debate among Kenyans abroad about the hidden costs of services in the US, where seemingly straightforward tasks can quickly become expensive when labour is billed hourly.
