A fire broke out at a garage off Ole Dume Road in Kilimani, Nairobi, on Monday night, destroying several vehicles and leaving mechanics and vehicle owners counting losses.
Nairobi County Chief Officer for Customer Service Geoffrey Mosiria said the blaze took more than four hours to contain after firefighters and disaster response teams were deployed to the scene.
In a post on his X account on Tuesday, September 8, Mosiria said the fire involved vehicles, petrol and other highly flammable materials stored inside the garage, making the operation difficult and dangerous.
“The fire took more than four hours to contain because it involved vehicles, petrol, and many other highly flammable materials stored inside the garage,” Mosiria said.
He added that he personally visited the scene after the County Disaster Management Centre received a distress call and coordinated the response alongside disaster management officers, local residents and mechanics at the facility.
Mosiria described the incident as a difficult operation but praised the response teams for working to bring the situation under control.
“It was a very difficult and dangerous operation, but our teams worked tirelessly to bring the situation under control,” he said.
The county official said the cause of the fire had not yet been established, with investigations expected to determine what triggered the blaze.
The extent of the losses was significant, with most of the vehicles inside the garage reportedly burned beyond recovery. Mechanics whose businesses and equipment were affected are also among those impacted by the incident.
Mosiria expressed sympathy to the affected mechanics and vehicle owners, saying the county remained committed to responding to emergencies and protecting lives and property across Nairobi.
“Our thoughts are with the mechanics and vehicle owners who have suffered losses tonight,” he said.
He also commended Nairobi County’s Disaster Management officers, the local community and other individuals who participated in efforts to contain the fire.
