APS Bomet have raised their ambitions ahead of the 2026/27 SportPesa League season, with head coach Sammy “Pamzo” Omollo seeking to transform the club from a relegation survivor into a top-five contender.
The Black Berets endured a demanding first season after gaining promotion to the top flight, but a strong finish helped them secure a 10th-place finish and preserve their status. They now want to build on that foundation, targeting a top-five position this term and an eventual Premier League title within the next three years.
Omollo has placed considerable emphasis on squad continuity as he prepares his charges for a campaign that begins with an away assignment against Mathare United on August 29–30.
“We have no plans to release any player from the current squad,” Omollo said.
That opening fixture will be followed by a stern test when APS Bomet host defending champions Gor Mahia between September 4 and 7. They will then face Nairobi United, promoted 3K FC and Murang’a Seal in quick succession.
The coach has used pre-season to strengthen the squad’s fitness and tactical organisation, recording encouraging results including a 2-1 build-up victory over Kakamega Homeboyz at Bukhungu Stadium on August 15, a day after losing 2-1 to Kiminini Combined.
“I hate pre-season training because there is no chance to make a sliding-tackle,” Omollo joked, before highlighting his personal drive. “What pushes me to take bottom-placed teams is always the motivation to prove my doubters wrong.”
The former Premier League Coach of the Month winner wants his side to retain the defensive discipline that yielded key victories over AFC Leopards and Bandari last season. Omollo is also overseeing the development of his son, Denzel, who plays as a defender for the club.
“He is at APS Bomet on merit and not because of my name,” Omollo said, insisting that Denzel faces the exact same standards as his teammates.
Beyond immediate results, the club’s wider vision has received backing from patron and Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, with plans for a new Sh900 million stadium in Bomet forming part of the long-term project.
“We are building a team that can compete, not just survive,” Omollo said. “We have to work hard and remain focused because the Premier League is becoming more competitive every season. We want to take the next step and compete for the top positions.”
With three away fixtures in their opening five rounds, APS Bomet enter the campaign aiming to prove that their second year among Kenya’s elite will serve as the launchpad for sustained success.
