Kenya’s rugby powerhouse Kinale Girls are the 2026 Federation of East Africa Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) rugby 7s champions.
Kinale dethroned Uganda’s Jinja Secondary to win gold at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in Morogoro, Tanzania.
Kinale recovered from their 10-12 loss to Jinja in the opening game to claim the title in the round-robin competition.
In their second game, Kinale thrashed Tanzania’s Murongoine 43-0 before concluding their campaign with a 29-0 victory over compatriots Kimobo.
Kinale, coached by Allan Bush, were assured of the trophy after Kimobo upset Jinja 15-5.
Kinale, Jinja and Kimobo all finished on seven points but were separated by points difference.
Kinale are now on course to lift a rare FEASSA double if they win Monday’s 15s clash against Tanzania’s Murongoine.
Kinale beat compatriots St Joseph’s Girls’ Kitale 29-8 in the opening match. Only three teams are competing in the girls’ rugby 15s.
In the boys’ rugby 7s, Kenya’s Cardinal Otunga Senior School Mosocho need two wins to lift their inaugural title.
So far, the Nyanza champions are the only team to have won all four of their games.
On Monday, Cardinal Otunga will face Uganda’s champions Makerere College School and Busoga College.
National champions Butula High School will take on Uganda’s Mbarara High, while Friends School Bokoli will battle Busoga College.
In rugby 15s, St Mary’s Yala’s chances of lifting the title were dented after they drew 11-11 with Uganda champions Jinja Secondary on Sunday morning.
On Monday, reigning FEASSA champions Kisii School will renew their rivalry with national champions Upper Hill School.
It will be a repeat of the national final in which Upper Hill beat Kisii 15-8 in Kisumu. Both Kisii and Upper Hill have won their opening two games.
Upper Hill lead the standings with six points from two games, the same as Kisii, while Yala are third with five points.
Kenya’s representatives in boys’ volleyball, Matiliku, were on Sunday knocked out of the championship after suffering their third consecutive defeat.
They lost in straight sets, 25-19, 27-17, 25-17 to Bukedea while national champions, Chesamisi, suffered their second defeat after going down 3-2 (25-20, 18-25, 25-20, 22-25, 14-16) to Rwanda’s Lycee du Nyanza.
