Museveni Celebrates as Grandson Graduates From UK Military Academy

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has celebrated his grandson, Ruhamya Kainerugaba, after he completed officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom.
Ruhamya graduated alongside fellow Ugandan officer cadet Andrew Bakyira Ruyondo, who was recognised as Sandhurst’s best international cadet after winning the International Sword.
The two were among 247 cadets commissioned during the academy’s Sovereign’s Parade earlier this month.
Museveni shared his message on Sunday, August 16, congratulating the two young officers and welcoming Ruhamya into what he described as his “big family of UPDF”.

Ruhamya Set to Serve in UPDF

Ruhamya is the eldest son of Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who also trained at Sandhurst.
He joined the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces as a private in June 2025 before being selected for officer training at the British military academy.

His graduation therefore extends a military tradition that has now involved three generations of the Museveni family.

Gen Muhoozi had earlier shared photographs of his son during training and said he was doing an “excellent job” at Sandhurst. He also compared Ruhamya’s experience with his own time at the academy.

Museveni Encourages Young Ugandans

In his message, Museveni used his grandson’s graduation to encourage young Ugandans to consider military service.
“Young Ugandans, Army service gives you a good foundation. I congratulate the parents of the two young officers,” the president wrote, signing off with his traditional title Ssaabalwanyi, meaning Commander of the Fighters in Luganda.
He also congratulated the parents of the two newly commissioned officers.
The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst is the British Army’s officer training academy. Its regular commissioning course runs for 44 weeks and covers military skills, fitness, leadership, decision-making and field exercises.
The academy also trains officers from other countries. Sandhurst says it has trained personnel from more than 90 countries in recent years.
