Kenyans Divided Over Christina Shusho Kneeling To Mama Ida Odinga In Viral Video

Tanzanian gospel star Christina Shusho has sparked a heated conversation across social media. The singer recently shared a short video of her meeting with Mama Ida Odinga. In the clip, Shusho is seen kneeling before the widow of Kenya’s former Prime Minister.

The post included a brief caption. It read: “Safari bado inaendelea…One step at a time Thank you Mama @mamaidaodinga.”

The visual of the gospel minister on her knees has divided Kenyans on Instagram. While some see it as a beautiful act of humility, others view it through a strict religious lens.

A Moment of Humility

In the video, Christina Shusho approaches Mama Ida with a gift. She gracefully lowers herself to the floor. She remains in a kneeling position while interacting with the matriarch.

Mama Ida remains standing throughout the exchange while receiving the wrapped gift. She appears to smile and accept the gesture warmly. The act is a common cultural sign of respect for elders in many East African communities.

Faith and Bowing

However, many followers were quick to point out their religious objections. They argued that a gospel minister should only kneel before a higher power.

@lucy_thepoet expressed this sentiment clearly. She wrote: “Thou shalt not bow down thyself to anyone except the Lord your God. Thankyou.”

Others shared this view. @ahmeisahmed stated: “We only kneel before GOD not humans.”

“The kneeling is wrong especially for a gospel musician.” — @pastorcyruskahoro.

@nancychep added to the theological debate. She wrote: “You don’t bow down to any man only God the creator and giver of life and our savior Jesus Christ.”

A Gesture of Respect

On the other side of the divide, many defended Shusho. They argued that the act was purely cultural. They believe it shows the singer’s upbringing and character.

@maryndede was vocal in her support. She wrote: “Christina Shusho kneeling down was just a gesture of respect.”She further compared it to regional traditions. She asked: “Ugandan women kneel down when serving their husbands, does that mean they worship them and not God?”

@miss_chebet.m agreed with this cultural perspective. She noted: “Her kneeling down is a form of respect to elders in their culture…Same as Uganda, y’all are just looking for reasons to quote the bible…”

“I love shusho, that kind of humility is not common these days.” —@duchessofmosocho.

Focus on Mama Ida

The debate also turned toward Mama Ida Odinga. Some users questioned why she did not ask the singer to stand up.

@reinhard_otieno commented: “She didn’t bother to loft her up meaning she enjoys the submission and the glory.” Similarly, @8400emma asked: “Like she couldn’t stand her up first.”
