Kenya banks on youth to shape Wushu’s future

Kenya’s Wushu fraternity is laying the foundation for sustained international success by investing heavily in grassroots talent development, with the Kenya Kung Fu Wushu Federation rolling out structured programmes seeking to produce the country’s next generation of continental and world champions.

The federation has intensified its youth development strategy by expanding regional clubs, organising national training camps and creating more competitive opportunities for young practitioners as it seeks to strengthen Kenya’s presence on the global Wushu stage.

Kenya Kung Fu Wushu Federation president Ngarauiya Njoge said the inaugural national championship marked a significant milestone in the federation’s journey from organising local competitions to establishing a nationwide talent development structure.

“We are here for the first national competition. We have held competitions before, but they were local. Today we have eight teams from different regions coming together, and this is the Wushu journey for Kenya,” said Njoge.

He noted that teams from Kiambu, Mombasa, Eldoret, Narok, Murang’a, Nakuru, Machakos and Marsabit are now part of the federation’s expanding development programme.

The federation has deliberately prioritised children and teenagers, believing early exposure to the sport will create a sustainable pipeline of athletes capable of representing Kenya at the highest level.

“The most important age group today is from four years to 17 years. They are the ones who will build Wushu in the future,” Njoge said.

He added that the federation plans to expand school and community club programmes to attract more young participants. Njoge also acknowledged the continued support of the Chinese Embassy in Kenya and Kenyatta University in promoting the sport.

“The Embassy of China in Kenya has supported us for a long time, and with Kenyatta University organising this event, I can see this is a good way for Wushu to grow in our country,” he said.
