Teacher Cillah has sparked conversations among Kenyans after revealing that she earns a monthly salary of KSh 37,000 as a teacher. The teacher shared her experience while speaking about the financial challenges faced by people working in the teaching profession.
Financial Challenges Facing Teachers
Cillah explained that surviving on a teaching salary can be difficult, especially for people who depend entirely on their monthly income without having other sources of money.

A Small Salary Growth Since 2022
The revelation came after she compared her starting salary with what she currently earns, explaining that her pay had increased by only KSh 9,000 since she joined the profession in 2022.
Speaking in a video shared on Tuesday, November 3, Cillah disclosed that she started earning KSh 28,000 before her salary increased to the current KSh 37,000.
What Teacher Cillah said about salary increments
Cillah explained that the KSh 9,000 increase over four years translated to approximately KSh 2,250 annually. She expressed frustration over the slow growth, arguing that teachers need to find other ways of making money.
“I know people talk about loans and everything, but to make it, Mwalimu lazima ujisukume ama you think outside the box. Since I started working, nilianziwa na KSh 28,000. Saa hii nalipwa KSh 37,000,” she said.

Why she believes teachers need side hustles
The educator argued that depending entirely on a teaching salary could make it difficult for someone to achieve financial independence. She noted that people with inheritance, connections, or businesses could have an advantage when it comes to achieving their financial goals.
