World Breastfeeding Week is being observed globally from August 1 to 7 to raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding for the health and well-being of both mothers and babies.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breastfeeding provides infants with the nutrients they need during their first six months of life, while exclusive breastfeeding helps protect them from infections and supports healthy growth.
The annual campaign also calls on communities, healthcare providers and employers to create environments that enable mothers to breastfeed.
Baby-friendly hospitals are encouraged to support breastfeeding immediately after birth, while breastfeeding-friendly workplaces help mothers continue nursing after returning to work.
