Oga Obinna: Why Modern Marriage Has Lost Its Respect

Content creator and media personality Oga Obinna says marriage no longer carries the respect it once did. In a video posted on his Instagram page, Obinna said society’s attitude towards married couples has changed over the years.
He argued that marriage was once treated as something sacred and deserving of honour, unlike what he believes is happening today.
Marriage once symbolised respect.
According to Obinna, getting married in the past meant that other people respected the relationship and kept their distance. He recalled that friends would even remind each other that someone was now married, making it clear that they should not interfere in the couple’s relationship.
“Back in the day, people used to respect marriage. Marriage was a sacred institution.” Obinna said marriage was once viewed as a commitment that deserved protection from outsiders.

He says today’s reality is different.

The media personality argued that marriage no longer discourages people from pursuing someone who is already married. Instead, he claimed that some people now see marriage as the beginning of competition rather than a boundary to respect.
Obinna said this applies to both men and women. According to him, when a man gets married, some women begin showing interest in him, while a married woman may also attract attention from other men.
“If it’s a man, he just got married, now that is where all the ladies… When it’s a lady, she just got married, the men are like, ‘Okay, now let the games begin.’”

Former partners also return.

Obinna also claimed that ex-partners often reappear after someone gets married. He suggested that former lovers sometimes use the occasion to revisit the past or speak about previous relationships.
“Ma exes wanakuja… If it’s a woman, all the male exes… If it’s a man, the female exes now show up.” He added that these encounters can create unnecessary distractions for newly married couples.
