Ruto, Rachel arrive in Evian, France for the G7 Summit

President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto have arrived in Evian, France, for the G7 Leaders’ Summit.

Global leaders have gathered in Évian-les-Bains, France, for high-level talks on the world economy, security, climate change, and international financial reforms.

President Ruto attending the summit shows part of Kenya’s growing diplomatic role on the global stage, where he is expected to represent Africans’ interest.

The summit, hosted by France, runs from June 15 to 17.

It brings together leaders from major economies, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, and Canada, alongside invited nations such as Kenya, selected to represent broader African interests.

The visit also presents a key opportunity to deepen international partnerships, attract investment, and expand economic cooperation aimed at creating jobs and improving livelihoods for Kenyan citizens.

The summit is focused on three major global issues shaping current international relations.

A key topic is the recent diplomatic breakthrough between the United States and Iran, which has reduced immediate tensions but still raises concerns among leaders about long-term stability in the Middle East.

Alongside this, the ongoing war in Ukraine remains a central priority, especially following recent Russian strikes, with discussions centred on sustaining support for Ukraine and exploring possible pathways toward de-escalation and eventual peace.

The summit is also addressing global economic imbalances that are increasingly affecting trade, supply chains, and financial stability.
Leaders are expected to discuss how to manage uneven economic growth, rising debt pressures in developing countries, and disruptions in global trade systems.
Overall, the meeting reflects a broader effort by the G7 to manage interconnected security and economic crises rather than introduce entirely new global frameworks.
