The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has launched an online, self-paced teacher capacity-building programme on Competency-Based Education (CBE) assessment and reporting, in a move aimed at enhancing continuous learning and accelerating digital transformation in the education sector.
The programme is offered through the Competency-Based Assessment Learning Management System (CBALMS), which is managed by KNEC’s Educational Assessment Resource Centre (EARC).
The platform complements the EARC Learning Management System (LMS), with both portals designed to strengthen the capacity of teachers and other education stakeholders in learner assessment, reporting and professional development.
According to KNEC, the CBALMS portal is specifically tailored for educators, assessors and item writers. It focuses on competency-based assessment, test construction, marking, learner reporting and other assessment-related skills.
The EARC LMS portal, meanwhile, serves as a broader capacity-building platform offering a range of online learning programmes, continuous professional development courses and educational resources aligned with national standards and best practices.
Both platforms are free to use and operate on a self-paced model, allowing users to learn at their convenience while tracking their progress through individual modules.
Learners are required to complete modules sequentially, with each new module unlocking only after the previous one has been completed.
“Through the KNEC-EARC LMS, capacity building, technology and online learning come together to empower educational leaders, teachers and institutions to grow, innovate and transform assessment for lasting impact,” KNEC said.
How to enrol on the CBALMS portal
Teachers and other users can register by visiting the CBALMS portal through a modern web browser and creating an account using accurate personal details.
Applicants are required to provide a valid personal email address, where a confirmation message containing an activation link will be sent.
Once the account is activated, users can access and subscribe to available courses.
The courses include Introduction to CBALMS, Assessment for Learning, Inclusive Assessment, Reporting and Feedback, as well as programmes tailored for senior school and vocational skills education.
Upon successful completion of all modules, learners can download certificates directly from the platform.
How to enrol on the EARC LMS portal
Users can register on the EARC LMS by creating an account and providing the required details.
To log in, users enter their registered email address or username and password before receiving a One-Time Password (OTP) through email for verification.
After accessing the portal, users can browse available courses, enrol in their preferred programmes and begin learning through the “Continue Learning” option.
Lessons are organised into modules that must be completed in sequence. KNEC has advised users to bookmark the portal for easier access and continued learning.
