WATCH: Flaqo’s Skit Perfectly Captures Kenyan Mums’ Selective Hospitality

Comedian Flaqo has shared a new skit on Instagram titled “Mums Treating Visitors Differently,” using a light-hearted family scenario to show how a visitor’s reception can change in an instant depending on who is at the door.

Visitors at the Door

Her reaction suggests that the visitors are important guests who deserve a special meal and the best treatment available.

Mama Otis quickly springs into action, determined to prepare a proper welcome for the guests. “Go buy 1kg of meat, potatoes, rice, and also slaughter a hen.” She continues listing the items needed for the occasion. “My new utensils…”

It begins with Otis calling out to his mother. “Mum, mum, Mama Otis.” “Huh?” Mama Otis responds. Otis then informs her that visitors have just arrived at the house. The news immediately sparks excitement. “OMG, the new plates!”

A Sudden Change

Just as the preparations appear to be gathering pace, Otis reveals the identity of the visitors. “They are Dad’s brothers, Uncle Mito, Shosh, Theresa, and Uncle Fred.” The mood shifts immediately. Mama Otis pauses before offering a brief response. “Mmh.”

The excitement that had filled the conversation moments earlier suddenly vanishes. Sensing the change, Otis asks: “Aah, mum, what’s up?”

New Instructions

Mama Otis then abandons the elaborate plans she had just outlined.

Instead of meat, rice, potatoes, and chicken, she issues a much simpler instruction.

“Serve them githeri and the strong tea.” She follows it with another directive. “Tell them I am not around.” The sharp contrast between her first reaction and her new instructions forms the heart of the skit’s humour.

Only moments earlier, she had been ready to bring out new plates, new utensils, and a feast for the visitors. Once she learns who has arrived, those plans are quickly shelved.

Otis Gets His Answer

Confused by the sudden turnaround, Otis attempts to respond. “But mum…”

Before he can continue, Mama Otis firmly cuts him off. “Go!” Otis closes the door as instructed, while Mama Otis resumes humming to herself, bringing the exchange to an abrupt end.
